Next year in May, SRP to increase electricity price by 8.8% and APS is even requesting 10.55%!
Most solar calculators do not factor in the increases in electric prices which are going to be charged to consumers. But those increases play a big factor in the calculation for a number of reasons: 1. The amount the utility company returns for produced power by your photovoltaic system also goes up which reduces the return on investment period. 2. Increases come on top of each other which increases the price for electrical power over the years dramatically. 3. The Return On Investment period (ROI) shortens which is an important factor for deciding to invest in a solar system.
One of the reasons SRP mentions in their letter to customers is that they "must anticipate the challenges all utilities face as our country shifts to cleaner but more expensive ways to generate electricity." This is important because this reason will become more influential in the future. Our country - and the rest of the world - has no choice but to generate more clean energy in the future and that will drive the cost of energy up dramatically. It is the old rule of economics of supply and demand. Demand will only go up while supplying green energy will become increasingly difficult. In their Questions and Answers section, APS says that they do not expect that this increase will be the only one coming.
Therefore, the power you generate with your own panels will become more valuable over time!
